Waiting on the Lord is one of our greatest struggles. No one enjoys waiting and suffering feels like an eternity. The Psalms are full of David’s pleas for the ending of his great suffering, years of persistent suffering due to both his sins and the sins of others.
Yet ultimately, he writes:
“The Lord is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.
The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.
The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time.
You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing” (Psa 145:13b-16).
In Matthew 8: 1-4, we read of the man with leprosy who, with humble, heart-felt reverence, lowers himself before Jesus, and kneeling at his feet, says to Jesus, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
This man had probably experienced horrific suffering for quite some time and yet, he was bowing before Jesus, professing Jesus’ power to cleanse and surrendering to Jesus’ will and timing. “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
Waiting. Continuous prayer. Humble reverence. Surrendering to God.
Lord, help me to wait with humble reverence. Help me to surrender my desires to your will and timing. No matter how bruised, battered and broken my heart feels, help me to wait respectfully on you. Help me to trust that you hear my prayers and you will help me.
