“Easter” is the day when once a year, families gather for a Sunday meal, when children look forward to finding hidden, multi-colored eggs, and hopefully having the pleasure of biting into a chocolate bunny or a marshmallow “peep”. All great fun… but…
“Resurrection Sunday” is a more accurate description of the importance of Easter. It is the anniversary of that matchless day in which Jesus rose from the grave in the fullness of life, so that all who receive in Him as Lord, will also be afforded the fullness of life with Him.
The resurrection of Christ was a transformative day for Him. His lifeless body was put away, seemingly forever, to create a separation between all people and His radical teachings about the Kingdom of God and living a life of humility and servanthood. That is the life model that Jesus personally exemplified during His earthly ministry. It was a call to live in contrast to the hypocrisy of religious and political leaders and the pleasures offered by the world.
Such a call represents transformation for all who choose to follow Christ in His life and His resurrection. In the frailty of our humanity, our transformation and resurrection cannot be left to a single day each year. Unlike Easter traditions, our personal resurrection requires us, each day, to “die to our former selves” and strive to receive a renewed life as we follow Christ in faith.
